With many reports coming in on the sales numbers of November, one thing is clear, Sony (mainly Playstation) is doing bad this last quarter of 2008 compared to their competitors.
In the latest sales numbers Playstation is getting hammered. The Xbox 360 has sold more then a combined numbers of the PSP and PS3. How this is possible, easy answer ‘ the price’ . The Xbox 360 is selling for $199 compared to the PS3 which is selling for $399. Yes the PS3 offers more for your money then the 360, but with the current economic crisis, people think cheap first, then quality. Same goes for the PSP, the DS lite sells for $130 compared to $170. Yeah it’s only a $40 difference but it’s still a game or two more.
- Wii – 2,040,000
- DS – 1,570,000
- Xbox 360 – 836,000
- PSP – 421,000
- PS3 – 378,000
- PS2 – 206,000
Despite Sony managing to sell 60% more then 2007’s number of units, it was to be expected with a better software release calender then in 2007.
Even if the Playstation hardware sales are up compared to last year, what was said to be the year of the Playstation is turning in the year of financial disaster world wide.
The question remains, what will effect shareholders minds on their decisions, the numbers being up compared to last year or not being able to beat the competition (360) with more hardware sales?
You decide We look as they decide.
It’s perhaps due to the fact that MS have (apparently) finally released a ‘reliable’ 360. All those previous customers are probably rushing to buy the machine they should have got in the first place! ;-p
But seriously… why is everyone so fixated on US sales? I rarely see mention of Japan or especially Euro sales, where the PS3 has been outselling 360 almost constantly.
With the current economic climate, it’s hardly surprising that the 360 is doing so well in the US. Apart from the lower price which you mention, in times of ‘crisis’, American’s tend to buy American. So the current situation effectively helps MS two-fold.
Only when Sony finally reduce the price of PS3 will we truly see if people are buying 360s because they _want_ them, or if it’s simply because it’s cheaper.
