Sony London Planning New IP, Two Games Not Forgotten

In an interview with GameSpot Nicolas Doucet talks about new IP being planned at the London Studio of SCE, and two games that were thought to be cancelled, are actually “on hold”. A while back, Getaway 3, and Eight Days were thought to be cancelled for development, but they were put on hold, because SCE London were actually focusing on their SingStar and EyeToy projects. Maybe further down the line the projects will be reborn, but as of now, no plans yet.

There new IP is a different type of concept, but no bits of detail on what the game will be have been told.

Eight Days and The Getaway were cancelled under Phil Harrison’s reign

In a interview with Kikizo, Eric Boltjes and Angie Smets talked about the cancelled projects Eight Days and The Getaway. It seems that prior to Shuhei Yoshida appointment the project was already scrapped. The news just came out at the same time as the change of power at the head of the company.

Well, I would say Eight Days and The Getaway were already cancelled – we have this process of “green light” meetings… for every project we have these different meetings to see how the project is doing.

But that didn’t mean that these projects were already in production phase as some thought.

Oh no, they were still at prototype phase. That’s the right moment to decide to hold these kinds of meetings, if you do for a game that’s almost done it’s obviously too late to have a look at it!

We hope that PlayStation fans will now have a better opinion about Shuhei Yoshida.

Another look at Eight Days

As you know Eight Days got cancelled a few months ago and the Playstation community weren’t happy at all because the game looked so good. The only thing we could look at was the E3 2006 tech demo that was believed to be in-game footage.

As we all waited we got teased with some animation footage that made it’s way to the Internet. This made the game look even better than the E3 2006 presentation.

And now, we are now presented with more footage of the game, this time in-game! Jim Jagger, 3D animator for the game, has released a demo reel containing footage of Eight Days. Here it is:-

How good did that look? Looked like the game made some significant progress. Guess we will never see it.

Eight Days animation test level video

Remember Eight Days? Yes that game that got canned. Below is a video of the very game in action… but not to the full extent. The video shows off the games animation system and it looks damn good. It’s a shame to see a game like this get cancelled.

Eight Days Trailer Basic Navigation

Eight Days was a coop based third person shooter that was set to be released in the summer of 2009. Unfortunately Sony cancelled the game in the summer of 2008 and with it went two and a half years of my work.

Here is a quick capture from the Eight Days Animation Test Level, showing the basic navigation of the main character, followed by the original 2006 E3 trailer. As Animation Director, it was my responsibility to design and implement the animation tools and pipeline with the goal of creating a fluid, yet responsive, animation system.

Eight Days and The Getaway cancelled

These two games, Eight Days and The Getaway are both cancelled. Eight Days was a great looking game, in fact, click here to see a video of it. The Getaway, well i wasn’t really into The Getaway games so that doesn’t bother me much but i’m sorry its made a lot of Playstation 3 owners mad.

In an interview with developmag.com, the new president Sony Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida was asked about the Eight Days and The Getaway cancellations:

You mentioned the cancellation of Eight Days and The Getaway – were those two things related? The two games seemed to be big, typical single-player games – not online experiences…

If I am truly honest that was part of the consideration. As I say, there are many projects we want to do and we look at many different angles for them, such as profitability, how long it may take, and where it fits in the portfolio – along with other strategic aspects that we are trying to delivery for the platform. So it was just one of the issues.

Not to worry though, we have great looking games coming up.

Eight Days now in full production

We spoke about what happened to Eight Days a few weeks ago and couldn’t really find any information on the game. Well now news has just come in that Eight Days is now in full production!

“A team of 63 is currently working on the game, which is expected to increase to around 120″

According to videogamer the Sony London team are also working on the next “The Getaway” game, but first they are working to get Eight Days complete and ready for release before moving across to The Getaway.

“The idea is to have two pre-production teams and one production team, which flips onto whatever product, at that point of time, is ready to have that team working on it,”

Whatever happened to Eight Days?

Eight Days for Playstation 3

Eight Days was first shown at E3 2006 an probably took the show. Eight Days looks to be like a third person action game, something similar to Uncharted Drakes Fortune. But what the hell has happened to the game? There has been no news or talk about the game and i want to find out as much information as possible.

I’ve looked on the net to try and find any information regarding Eight Days and where its currently up to in development. I couldn’t find much apart from game information from IGN:

Originally known only for its breathtaking demo of an exploding gas station shown in video form at E3 2005(and later, a demo of a car being shot up in a different CES 2006 presentation) , this game eventually was revealed as Eight Days, a crime epic from SCE Studios London. Set in the desert of Arizona, the game features eight days in the bad times of the criminal element. The game features open environments that you can run in, with fully-modeled buildings that you can exploit when the action gets too heavy on the streets and outskirts.

To be honest i don’t think this game is cancelled, i think the game is still in development but is probably at the bottom of the list. It could be released in 2009 and more news maybe at E3 2008. There is not really a lot of information about this game at all, i might contact Sony myself and see what they say. We can only wait.

Here is the Wikipedia article.

Do you think the game is still in development?
